At the time, official merchandise produced by Sub Pop was typically printed on black T-shirts, matching the album's iconic cover artwork.However, when supplies of the standard black shirts ran out at a live show, an unusual alternative was produced on-site: a white version of the shirt. According to silk-screen artist Jeff Ross, who was involved in the original production, only 48 of these white shirts were printed.As a result, this rare variation has come to be regarded as the holy grail of Nirvana T-shirts among collectors.
